Wellston Middle School receives ODEW Momentum AwardFree Access

Wellston Middle School (WMS) recently received the “Momentum Award,” from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW), to recognize achievement based on the 2022-2023 results on the Local Report Card.

Specifically, the Momentum Award presents to a Local Education Agency (LEA) which has improved its performance index by three or more points from the 2021-2022 report card to the 2022-2023 report and received a value-added rating of four or more stars.

WMS remains most proud of the following: Rocket students, staff and families who are relentlessly committed to excellence; a staff dedicated to strengthening a Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) to benefit the whole child and to meet needs where they begin; and a district which supports. Important has been creating a positive learning environment through framework of Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS), matched with consistent and concentrated time and effort surrounding Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) to promote holistic development of our young people.

A positive climate with foundations of Respect, Responsibility and Right Choices (Rocket Pride) opens time for rigorous learning of Ohio’s Academic Content Standards through evidence-based strategies to meet varied needs to include daily time scheduled for Academic as well as an “ICU period” for extra time and support in completing missing assignments. The team approach at WMS is one of a growth mindset, where data informed decisions are the norm and collaboration makes for strong systems and frameworks via clear protocols.

As a building and as a district, WMS understands that their most prized possessions exist in children, and tireless efforts to nurture young minds is always the answer. WMS is proud of its teams — including teachers, administrators, support staff, students, families and the community — for collective contributions to public education and investment in futures. That matters, and WMS understands these blessings.

Maintaining momentum remains the goal to make a difference in the lives of students. The recognition of the Momentum Award from ODEW further motivates WMS to reach for the stars.
