Wellston School Board to hire new superintendentFree Access

Meet-and-greet scheduled for April 22 at WHS

The Wellston City Board of Education has apparently made a decision on hiring a new superintendent of schools. The Board has announced plans to take formal action to hire the district’s new leader on Tuesday evening, April 22, then have a meet-and-greet event that same evening to introduce that person to the public.

A few months ago, Dr. Brian Rau, who has served the Wellston City School District as superintendent since mid-2022, submitted his letter of resignation. Dr. Rau’s resignation was submitted in February with the finish date of July 31, which is the end of his initial three-year contract with the district. The Board had voted 3-2 on Monday, Feb. 10, to accept Dr. Rau’s resignation. This item was an addition to the amended agenda and was the final item the Board acted on under the “other business” portion of the agenda.

Since then, the Wellston City School District Board of Education has been searching for a replacement. The Board held at least four special meetings (March 24, 25, 31, and April 5) with executive sessions for the purpose of discussing employment of personnel/contracts, and compensation of employees. It was speculated that these meetings were held as part of the search for a new superintendent.

The Telegram then received a meeting notice during the Wellston School Board meeting on Monday, April 14, that announced that a special Board meeting and open house for the hiring of a new superintendent would be held on Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. at Wellston High School cafetorium. Following that brief meeting, a meet-and-greet event with light refreshments will be held to publicly welcome the new superintendent.

Wellston School Board President Terry Gill noted in the meeting notice that the candidate for superintendent will be new to the Wellston community.
