Many motorists traveling in Jackson County on U.S. Route 35 west of Jackson and on State Route 93 between Jackson and Wellston on Thursday, Nov. 20 may have noticed a specialized heavy-haul trailer carrying a “oversized load” of a much greater size than normal. The cargo is a large transformer. The oversized-load unit has a permit from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to transport this load to its destination. An ODOT spokesman later told The Telegram that the unit is 311 feet long, 16 feet and 6 inches wide, and 16 feet tall. The full rig and load weigh 907,208 pounds. The Telegram began receiving messages at approximately 11:30 a.m. about the oversized-load unit as it was turning off the exit ramp from U.S. Route 35 onto State Route 93 toward Coalton. Prior to its arrival by truck and trailer in Jackson County, the load was spotted on a railroad car arriving in Richmon Dale in nearby Ross County. The final destination is the Rolling Hills Generating Plant, which is located just west of Wilkesville on State Route 160 in Vinton County. The oversized-load unit took a number of hours to traverse from eight miles from the U.S. Route 35/State Route 93 overpass into Wellston and resulted in some traffic delays on State Route 93.. Reportedly, the unit took around an hour to travel through Coalton. A stop sign had to be removed at the intersection of Main Street and Broadway Street for the rig to be able to make the turn toward Wellston. Other obstacles along the way, including utility lines tree limbs, also held up travel. The unit was parked for the night at the Montgomery Trucking Co., located along E. 13th Street in Wellston, and will likely not resume its trip until at least Sunday. The hauler is reportedly waiting to hear about permits and has other tasks to complete before continuing. The anticipated route to the Rolling Hills Plant will be State Route 32, east to State Route 160, then south on State Route 160 to the Rolling Hills Plant. The unit is likely an “over dimensional” permitted vehicle/load, which means it is over-length on width or height and it may only travel during daylight hours, which are defined as 1/2 hour before sunrise and 1/2 hour after sunset.
