The Oak Hill Union Local School District Board of Education approved a workforce development opportunity for students with the United Steelworkers this summer.
Oak Hill Superintendent of Schools Jason Mantell discussed the “pilot program” through the United Steelworkers. He noted that Oak Hill High School Principal Whitney Crabtree and Oak Hill Middle School Principal Josh Donley jumped on this opportunity.
“We’re doing a pilot program through the United Steelworkers for initial training and development for our students, and potentially adult community members,” explained Mantell. “So essentially, what we’re going to do is, we’re going to be a training site.”
Mantell said, “There was going to be some hands-on in person, but I think a lot of it is going to be transitioned online. Students are able to get some training in this field. And again, it’s online, but they’ll take tests and work toward an industry credential. I think it’s another example of what our staff is doing to offer opportunities to our young people, not just what we’re doing between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.; but opportunities that are out there that they may not know about otherwise.”
It was noted that the opportunity would be offered in June through Oak Hill Union Local School District’s summer school.
