Lake Hope State Park announces upcoming events in SeptemberFree Access

Lake Hope State Park in Vinton County will host a wide variety of naturalist programs during the remainder of this week.

Fridays

Archery: From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Learn the basics of shooting a compound bow and spend some time practicing your technique. Challenge yourself with a variety of target graphics or challenge a friend in a showdown of your newfound skill. This program is for ages 8 and up. Meet at the parking area across from the archery range. All materials will be provided and are free of charge. Adult- and child-sized bows of adjustable weight will be available. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes.

Turtle Time: From 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Learn about Lake Hope’s resident turtles and how to care for them. Kids and adults will have an opportunity to help feed and exercise these turtles and learn the best practices in turtle management. Meet at the Nature Center.

Thursday, Sept. 21

Candle Making: From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Put your creativity and patience to the test and learn a bit about dipping candles. Meet at the Nature Center. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up due to the use of hot paraffin wax.

Saturday, Sept. 23

Autumnal Equinox Hike: From 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Enjoy the last hours of summer and stroll through the forest in search of signs of the new season. This will be a three-mile hike of intermediate difficulty on Peninsula Trail. Meet at the Hope Furnace. Close-toed waterproof shoes are recommended.

Tree-rific: From 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Discover the secrets of trees through science, art and literature. Participants will learn how to age trees, complete a craft to take home and read a story all about the importance of these amazing organisms. Meet at the Nature Center. This is a great program for the whole family!
