Investigation continues: WCS teacher allegedly violates Title IX policyFree Access

The investigation into allegations of a Wellston City Schools (WCS) teacher making statements to a student that violates Title IX policy is continuing.

The teacher, whose name has not been released, was placed on administrative leave on the evening of Monday, Sept. 12, after the district received a complaint regarding statements that the staff member allegedly made.

WCS Superintendent Dr. Brian E. Rau told The Telegram on Wednesday, Sept. 29, that the school district is awaiting a final report from the investigator. Dr. Rau previously told The Telegram that a “thorough Title IX investigation” using an unbiased, external investigator was being conducted.

“Unfortunately, I do not have any updates,” said Dr. Rau. “I thought we may have a report late last week or perhaps this week.”

Dr. Rau added, “Once we receive the report, the individual has 10 days to review the report and make their comments. During this timeframe, I also have the opportunity to review the report.  So, we are in a holding pattern for now.”

The individual, according to Dr. Rau, is not permitted on school grounds, which is standard for Title IX investigations. He also noted that the rumor of the teacher being dismissed or arrested is untrue.

Due to the ongoing investigation, the school district would not comment further on the allegations, nor the identity of the teacher.

While the school district wouldn’t comment further on the matter, The Telegram was able to learn through the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights that Title IX protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. Furthermore, the WCS District echoes the above-mentioned education amendment.

The Telegram will provide an update when and if more information is released.
