Holzer Health System continues to institute its Nursing Residency Program, which is a structured initiative designed to support newly graduated RN and LPNs at Holzer as they transition into clinical practice.

The program utilizes a blended learning approach, combining online coursework, in-person instruction and scenario-based simulations. Any newly licensed RN or LPN at Holzer with less than 12 months of experience can be part of this residency program.

Each month, individuals receive eight hours of training with department experts. Four of these hours are online, while the other four are through hands-on practice and simulations. An orientation is included in this program, and there are two program rotations per year (June-November and December-May). Along with the six months of additional training, participants receive full pay while in the program. There are many clinical pathways within the Nursing Residency Program, such as Medical/Surgical, Telemetry, Critical Care, Emergency Department, Women and Children’s Health, Rehabilitation and Perioperative Services.

Holzer celebrated its first graduating class in June of this year. Recently, the program welcomed another class, which coincided with Holzer’s newly formed collaboration with the University of Rio Grande. This new class recently held its first session in the Davis Career Center’s Simulation Lab, located on URG’s campus in Rio Grande, Ohio. Overall, the vital partnership between Holzer and URG creates a beneficial and helpful environment for Holzer nurses, all while utilizing URG’s excellent facilities and building a strong foundation for local healthcare.

Michelle Young, M.S., R.N., C.N.E., C.H.S.E., Interim Nursing Program Administrator and Simulation Specialist at URG, says, “The Holzer School of Nursing is excited about this new partnership between Holzer and URG. Since the creation of the simulation center, we’ve been progressing toward this moment where education and practice come together in a meaningful way. We’re proud to partner with Holzer to help strengthen the nursing workforce and support new nurses as they transition into professional practices. This collaboration offers participants a supportive, hands-on learning environment that builds confidence and competence, laying the foundation for success in nursing practice and improved patient outcomes.”

Brandon Coughenour, BSN, RN, Director of Acute Specialty Services at Holzer, says, “In partnership with URG, residents gain hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art simulation lab. Instruction is led by a diverse team of clinical experts, including physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners and bedside nurses. Scenario-based training is facilitated by a core team of educators and department coordinators with over 100 years of combined experience.”

While Holzer’s Nursing Residency Program is in the early stages, its impact has already been tremendous. Olivia Harrison, Staff Nurse, Holzer Gallipolis Pediatrics, was in Holzer’s first Nursing Residency Program class. She says, “Holzer has created a great transition for young nurses. We can actually be part of simulations and understand what it’s like to be with patients. Simulations aren’t always a big part of schooling so it’s helpful to see different scenarios and engage in realistic exercises. The staff provided us with great resources that have helped move us forward.”

Chris Mohr, Emergency Department Clinical Coordinator at Holzer Gallipolis, backs up this sentiment, saying, “The program helps connect the dots between nursing school and the start of one’s career. When a nurse gets out of school, there’s a lot to take in. This program helps to prepare nurses, build their confidence and further their career as excellent, well-rounded nurses.”

Tanner Tackett, Charge Nurse in the CCU at Holzer Gallipolis, shares, “I’ve noticed major differences this year since the implementation of the program. There have been many new faces, but their knowledge is layered, and their skill levels are impressively versatile. I look forward to seeing this program grow.”
