Hit-and-run suspect arrested after crash involving toddlerFree Access

The Jackson Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) reported Friday afternoon, May 2 that a male suspect has been arrested in connection with the recent hit-and-run wreck involving a Jackson County toddler.

OSHP has identified the suspect as 38-year-old John D. Miller, Jr. of Athens area. Miller surrendered to troopers at an area McDonald’s restaurant and was taken into custody without any further problems. Miller is incarcerated in the Jackson County Correctional Facility where he faces an initial felony-level charge of leaving the scene of a serious injury crash. An additional charge or charges will likely be filed later after a review by the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

According to a news release issued Friday afternoon, May 2 OSHP had previously secured an arrest warrant through the Jackson County Municipal Court for Miller and worked several leads that came from media exposure and numerous specialized resources.

The arrest of Miller stems from a hit-and-run crash which occurred at approximately 8:05 p.m. Tuesday April 22, on State Route 93 north of Oak Hill and just north of the Zane Oak Road intersection, which left a two-year-old boy injured.

According to an OSHP news release issued after the crash, a red Dodge Dakota pickup truck was traveling southbound on State Route 93 when it struck a two-year-old boy in the roadway. The vehicle then continued off the right side of the road where it came to a controlled rest. The crash occurred in front of the child’s residence and as the father of the toddler came to render first aid, the driver left the scene and drove the pickup truck southbound on State Route 93.

The child was transported to the Adena Regional Hospital in Chillicothe, before being flown to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, in Columbus and was reportedly in good condition the very next morning.

OSHP subsequently released two surveillance photos from two different locations of the suspected pickup truck which may have helped provide information in the follow-up efforts to locate the truck. On April 25, OSHP reported it had located the pickup truck but not the driver. However, the driver of the pickup truck was not the owner.  Further investigation led to Miller being identified as the suspect driver.
