At the Wednesday, May 7 meeting of the Jackson County Commissioners, president Jon Hensler read into record the following statement on the passing of beloved Jackson County Municipal Court Judge Mark T. Musick:
“Longtime Jackson County Municipal Court Judge Mark T. Musick’s untimely passing is somber news, to say the least. Judge Musick held his post since first being elected in 2007, and he had intended to run for what would have been his last term this coming fall. It is impossible to know for certain how many lives were improved or outright saved by Judge Musick’s steadfastness and determination. He took to the bench at a time when the criminal justice system — locally and across the state and the nation — were changing rapidly, due in a large part to the influx of opioids, and Jackson County is forever indebted to Judge Musick for his response in the face of such adversity. In the years to come, through written word, he will be remembered as the man who started the county’s first Drug Court and the man who took on the drug abuse epidemic with a focus on treatment and compassion; and that is not wrong. The largest impact Judge Musick had, however, was on those who stood before him in the courtroom, cursing his name and all he stood for, only to have their lives transformed through the connections he helped forge. Those individuals will remember him as a man who dedicated the lion’s share of his time to his work and a man who truly cared. Judge Musick leaves behind a lasting impression, a job well done and a multitude of grateful souls.”
