On Wednesday morning, May 7, the Jackson County Economic Development Partnership along with the greater community of Wellston celebrated the announcement and plans for a new Adena Family Medicine Clinic complete with a drive-through pharmacy.

The construction of the new $2.4 million-dollar project is expected to begin this month inside the former Kroger building, which closed in August 2019, at 2 East A St. in Wellston.

A little over a year later in December 2020, the Jackson County Economic Development Partnership purchased the property from WICLO, Inc. – the company that originally developed the property for Kroger in 1967. The building became known as the “Partnership Plaza.” The Partnership, who are the developers, also continue ownership of the building.

The new family medicine clinic will be nearly 8,600 square feet, more than four times the size of the current facility, which is located at 118 South New York Avenue in Wellston. Adena has had a presence in Wellston since December 2015. That current clinic will remain open until the new state-of-the-art building is completed.

The new facility is designed to better serve the community, it will include expanded waiting areas, additional exam rooms for both primary and specialty care, and improved parking. A key highlight is the addition of a retail pharmacy with a drive-through aimed at addressing a critical community need as Fruth Pharmacy, the city’s only pharmacy, closed its doors on May 5 after a 45-year presence.

The project is the result of a strong collaborative effort between Adena Health and the Jackson County Economic Development Partnership, with vital funding support from the Appalachian Regional Commission. It has also received broad community backing, including from the City of Wellston and the Jackson County Board of Commissioners, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing rural health care.

The new facility is slated to open in early 2026.
