Jackson Wrestling honored at Awards Banquet

Members of the Jackson Wrestling team were honored during an awards banquet held Wednesday in the Jackson High School Commons. BOYS BASKETBALL ALL-OHIO: Combs named co-coach of the year in Division II
In 17 seasons, Matt Combs has directed the Vinton County Vikings on a course to becoming one of the most successful boys' basketball programs in the area.

On Tuesday, he was honored for his latest landmark season when he was named co-coach of the year on the 2016-17 Associated Press All-Ohio boys' basketball team in Division II.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Vikings run ends in Elite Eight
ATHENS - Behind one of the great two-year runs by the Vinton County Vikings, this year's team will go down as the best in school history.

After making the regional semifinals three times in the last nine years, the Vikings finally broke through to the Elite Eight for the first time in the history of the program.

However, their magical and historical season came to an end on Saturday, as they fell to Eastmoor Academy 69-48 in the Division II regional final inside the Convocation Center in Athens.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Vikings advance to the Elite Eight
ATHENS - Vinton County's goal since March 10, 2016 has been to make it back to the 'Sweet 16'.

Mission accomplished.

Now they're taking it a step farther.

That's because the Vikings advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history with a 62-54 win over Meadowbrook in a closely contested game in Thursday's regional semifinal at the Ohio University Convocation Center in Athens.

ELITE EIGHT: Vikings set to meet Eastmoor Academy
The stage is set for the regional final in Division II between the Vinton County Vikings and the Columbus-based Eastmoor Academy Warriors. The tip time will be Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Ohio University's Convocation Center.

The winner will get the ultimate prize of a state-tournament appearance.

BASKETBALL: District-13 all-star basketball teams announced
For the second-straight year, the District-13 Coaches Association has a repeat choice for Coach of the Year in Division II, as Vinton County's Matt Combs has again earned the honor.

In addition, Norm Persin of Oak Hill was named Coach of the Year in Division III.
