ALBANY - The Wellston Lady Rockets could not find the answers to solve Alexander in a TVC-Ohio Division softball game in Albany on Thursday afternoon. Wellston led 4-2 in the third before the Lady Spartans exploded for eight runs during the next three innings en route to a 10-4 loss.
Wellston (4-4, 1-3 TVC-Ohio) jumped on top early, as McKenna Kilgour tripled to lead off the game, but was thrown out on a ground ball to the left side by Erica Scott. After Ashley Compston struck out, the next three batters reached base against Gracie Hill. The Lady Rockets loaded the bases with walks to Kendra Coleman and Molly Smith, and Mya Bouska followed with a RBI walk for a 1-0 lead.
Alexander responded with a run to tie the game in the bottom of the first, but Wellston took advantage of a pair of defensive errors by the Lady Spartans in the top of the third and Molly Smith drove in two runs with a triple. Smith scored on a ground ball to the right side by Bouska to take a 4-1 advantage.
The momentum, however, was short-lived, as Hill retired the final 14 batters she faced.
After the Lady Spartans cut the margin in half with a run in the bottom of the third, they delivered the knockout punch over the next three innings, scoring three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth and two more in the sixth for the six-run victory.
Smith suffered the loss in the pitching circle for Wellston, as she allowed 10 runs on 12 hits and walked three. Hill allowed four runs on two hits in seven innings to pick up the victory for Alexander. She issued four walks and struck out five Lady Rockets.
Wellston returned to TVC Ohio Division action on Friday at Athens. The Lady Rockets return home for back-to-back non-league contests on Monday and Tuesday against Logan and Jackson.
River Valley 5, Wellston 3
WELLSTON - River Valley broke a scoreless game open with a pair of two-run rallies in the second and third innings to defeat Wellston 5-3 at Nancy Kibler Field on Wednesday.
Skyla Jones did all the damage during the two innings for River Valley with two 2-run home runs off Wellston's Ashley Compston. Then Kasey Birchfield drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth to give the Lady Raiders a 5-0 lead.
Wellston got things going in the bottom of the fourth when Kendra Coleman walked and scored on Mya Bouska's RBI single to get on the scoreboard.
Erica Scott drove in a run with a single into left field in the fifth to cut the deficit to three runs.
With two down in the bottom of the seventh, Emily Kisor, along with McKenna Kilgour singled and Scott drove in her second run of the game with a double that scored Kisor.
Wellston (4-3, 1-2 TVC-Ohio) had the tying runs on second and third, but Compston popped out at short to end the game.
Compston suffered the pitching loss, as she gave up five runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Airika Barr surrendered three runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts to earn the complete-game victory for River Valley.
Kilgour and Scott had two hits apiece to lead Wellston, while Bouska and Kisor chipped in with one hit apiece.
Wellston 10, Miller 0
WELLSTON - The Wellston Lady Rockets scored in four of the six innings that they came to the plate, including a six-run sixth inning in a 10-0 non-league victory over Miller on Wednesday at Nancy Kibler Field.
Molly Smith paced the Lady Rockets (4-2) with six scoreless innings in the circle, allowing just one hit and one walk, while striking out eight. Smith added a single, a pair of walks and scored twice at the plate.
Erica Scott had the only multi-hit game for Wellston with a pair of singles to go along with a walk, one RBI and a run scored.
