McARTHUR - The Vinton County Vikings and River Valley Raiders were involved in a seesaw battle throughout most of their Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division contest on Thursday afternoon.
When the smoke cleared, the Vikings captured an 8-5 victory on the first of a three-game home stand.
With the win, the Vikings improve to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the TVC-Ohio Division.
The offensive fireworks started in the first inning. The Raiders started with two runs against starter Adam Betts. Stien singled and Collins, who reached via an error, came around to score on a double by Farley.
The Vikings answered during their initial at-bat with a three-run effort started when Jacob Wells and Ryan Grigsby drew walks and Bailey Bartoe singled to load the bases. Wells scored when Lincoln Hayes was hit by a pitch.
The game was tied when Jake Harper reached base on a fielder's choice and the Vikings broke the tie when Logan Ward was hit with a pitch.
The Raiders took a short-lived 4-3 lead in the top of the third, with Edgar driving in Collins with a double.
The Vikings' offensive attack responded in their half of the third. It all happened with two outs, as Jake Harper doubled and scored on a single by Noah Waddell. Waddell came home on Logan Ward's single and the Vikings led 5-4.
The Vikings added three insurance runs in the fifth inning, as Wells singled, Grigsby was hit by a pitch, Bartoe flew out and Hayes drew a walk. Wells stole home and Hayes scored on a single by DJ Norris.
Waddell drove in the final run for an 8-5 lead.
Overall, the Vikings had nine hits as Waddell, Harper, and Wells had two hits apiece for the Vikings.
Athens 10, Vinton County 6
THE PLAINS - The Vinton County Vikings dropped a 10-6 decision against the Athens Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon in a TVC Ohio Division contest on the road.
It was a huge day for Athens' Nick Trainer who went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs in the contest.
The Bulldogs finished with 16 hits while the Vikings had eight.
Eight different Vikings had singles in the contest.
Preston Hayes, who surrendered six runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings or work, got the pitching win for Athens. DJ Norris suffered the loss, as he allowed 10 hits and eight runs in 3.2 innings for Vinton County. Chase Abele threw two and a third innings in relief.
The Vikings return to TVC-Ohio Division action on Monday at Alexander and will take on Piketon in a non-league contest on Tuesday at the VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe.
