WELLSTON - Leading 47-39 heading into the fourth quarter, the Wellston Golden Rockets were forced to withstand a furious comeback attempt by Athens and held on for a 62-61 TVC Ohio Division win on Friday night.

Athens began its comeback charge with 5:32 left in the game when Isaiah Butcher knocked down a three-pointer to cap a 10-3 run and pull the Bulldogs within one, 50-49.

Over the course of the next 4:10, the game was tied three times before Matt Simpson broke the deadlock with back-to-back baskets to push the Rockets lead to 60-56 with less than a minute to play.

Athens responded as Butcher hit his second three-pointer of the quarter to close within one.

With 15.8-seconds to play, Wellston's Jordan Lucas made two free throws to give Wellston a 62-59 lead.

Then Butcher was fouled while attempting a three-pointer with 1.5-seconds left. He made his first two attempts but missed the third and Lucas grabbed the rebound to secure the victory for the Rockets.

Wellston trailed 20-9 after one quarter of play, but rallied to outscore the Bulldogs 15-7 in the second to trail by only three at the half, 27-24.

Statistically, Wellston was impressive on the offensive end, shooting 52.7 percent (19 of 36) from the field, including 80 percent (20 of 25) from the free throw line. Athens made good on 20 of 46 (43.4 percent) shots and was 14-for-19 (73.6 percent) from the foul line.

The difference in the shooting numbers came from behind the arc, as the Bulldogs made three more 3-pointers for the game.

Individually, eight different players scored for Wellston, with Simpson leading the way with a game-high 21 points. Simpson also led the team in rebounds with nine and had two blocks. Michael Graham joined Simpson in double figures with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

Athens had four players score in double figures, as Elijah Williams led the way with 14 points, while Eli Chubb and Butcher each had 12, and Justin Hynes had 10.

In the junior varsity contest, the Rockets held on to beat Athens 42-40 in overtime.

The Rockets will remain at home next week, as they will host rival Jackson on Tuesday.
