The Vinton County Vikings came up short at they dropped and 62-51 decision to the Bloom Carroll Bulldogs as part of the Zane Trace Invitational Classic held Friday night. The Vikings got off to a 12-0 start but could not hold it as the Bulldogs caught fire.
It was a big night for Bulldog Josiah Brown who led all scorers with 25 points.
Both Naylan Yates, who was not playing at 100 percent, and Jake Speakman paced the Vikings offensively with 11 points each but it was turnovers and that did them in. The Vikings had 17 give-a-ways and Bloom Carroll was able take advantage.
The Vikings were also cold from the outside as they shot 3 of 19 (15.8 percent) effort from beyond the arc.
After the game, Viking head coach Matt Combs told WOUB the team has some work to do and tough competition would be good as the season continues.
"This is why we play tough teams early," said Combs. "I could go out and schedule some teams that we could beat, but doing that does not help us get ready for the post season."
The Vikings return to action Friday night when the open both the home and Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division slate against the Nelsonville York Buckeyes.
