WELLSTON - After surviving a letdown in the second set, the Wellston Lady Rockets' volleyball team regained its composure to win over Vinton County, 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22) in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division match on Thursday night in the season finale for both squads.
The win improves the Lady Rockets to 10-12 overall and 4-8 in TVC Ohio play, while Vinton County finished with a 3-19 record overall and 1-11 in the TVC Ohio Division.
Both teams begin sectional tournament play next week in their respective divisions.
In Division III, the seventh seeded Lady Rockets will travel to Albany to face the No. 2 seed Alexander Lady Spartans on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m.
Vinton County, also a seventh seed in Division II, will travel to Centenary on Wednesday, Oct. 18 for a 6 p.m. matchup against the No. 2 seed Gallia Academy Blue Angels.
The first set on Thursday featured three lead changes and three ties, with Wellston never losing the lead the Lady Rockets won all three tiebreaking points to pull away. Up 24-18, the set point came after a Vinton County hitting error. The Lady Vikings committed a total of 11 errors in the set.
Lacy Stapleton had two kills and a block to lead the Lady Vikings in 25-20 win in the second set to even the match at 1-1. Brookesanne Barnett and Samy Thompson had two kills apiece.
In the third set, Wellston got the winning mindset back, as the Lady Rockets rallied from a 12-8 deficit and went on to record a 25-18 win. Kelli Aubrey had three kills and Molly Smith served a pair of aces en route to the victory.
The fourth set was a tight battle throughout with five lead changes and six ties. Trailing 22-19, Wellston capitalized on two Vinton County errors and a kill by Aubrey tied it at 22-22. Two more attack errors by the Lady Vikings put Wellston ahead 24-22 and the set-point kill came from junior Emily Kisor, one of six for her in the match.
Wellston had one player finish in double-digits in kills, as Hannah Stewart had 11 and nine came from Aubrey. Madison Stewart had six kills and 10 digs and Tory Doles chipped in with five.
Lillie Stanley, who had a double-double with 35 assists and 12 digs, added five kills to go along with six ace serves for the Lady Rockets.
Shai Brandau and Smith collected 11 digs apiece, while the team-high mark came from Kaylee Taynor and libero Sydney Mullins with 27 and 38 digs respectively.
Vinton County finished with 34 kills for the match, led by Becca Clemons with 12, while Stapleton had eight, followed by six for Abbey Owings and Brookesanne Barnett added four.
Cassidy Griffith and Barnett combined for 31 of the teams' 32 assists with 17 and 14 respectively, while Kelsey Ward had a match-high in digs with 37 for the Lady Vikings.
Vinton County also boosted four additional players in double-digits in digs, as Clemons chipped in with 25, Barnett had 22, followed by Josie Hembree with 11 and Griffith had 10.
