WELLSTON - The Wellston Golden Rockets had their opportunity against Athens but came out on the short end of the deal.

The Golden Rockets (4-4, 2-2 TVC-OHIO) was left to watch Athens run out the clock after turning the ball over on downs with just 9-seconds remaining in a 14-13 loss in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division game Friday night at C.H. Jones Field.

Trailing by a touchdown at the end of the first half, the Rockets held Athens scoreless the rest of the game. A 15-yard touchdown run by Travis Jayjohn early in the fourth quarter pulled the Rockets within a point but the extra-point kick was blocked.

While it seemed Athens was poised to take control of the game with Evan Adams (114 yards rushing on 14 carries and a touchdown) seeming to run with ease, the Rockets' defense shut down the Bulldogs' momentum, forcing them to turn the ball over on downs twice in the second half.

Wellston's defense also stalled Athens' offense in the red zone after stripping the ball from quarterback Clay Davis on the Bulldogs' second possession in the third quarter.

The turnover sparked Wellston's offense, as they methodically drove 82-yards and scored on a 15-yard touchdown run by Jayjohn with 10:11 left in the fourth quarter.

But Athens prevented Wellston from completing the comeback and tying the game after successfully blocking the extra-point kick by Chase Ingalls.

Wellston rushed for 225-yards for the game, led by Jayjohn, who finished with 157-yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries.

On special teams, Wellston blocked a field goal attempt by Athens late in the first half, which was picked up by Jonathon Garvin and returned 17 yards to its own 42.

Athens (7-1, 4-0) scored first, coming on its opening drive of the game, capped by a 27-yard touchdown run by Evan Adams. The point-after gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.

The Rockets, though, responded with a score by Jayjohn, who ran over the left side for a 6-yard touchdown run, capping a 9-play, 64-yard drive on the first play of the second quarter to even the game 7-7.

Then after punts by both teams, Davis hooked up with Robert Dickelman for a 15-yard touchdown pass to springboard Athens to a 14-7 advantage with 6:18 left in the second quarter.

Davis finished 8 of 21 for 127 yards and one touchdown, while Treyce Albin had a game-high six catches for 83 yards for Athens.

It appeared the Bulldogs were going to increase their lead on their ensuing possession after driving 79-yards to the Wellston 8-yard line. But the Rockets blocked Athens' 25-yard field goal attempt to remain close going in at halftime.

Wellston was not able to snap the losing streak against the Bulldogs, which has now won nine straight against the Rockets.

Wellston will remain at home next week to take on the Meigs Marauders on Senior Night, while Athens will travel to River Valley.
