BASEBALL: Oak improve to 8-3 with win at Vinton County

Sports Editor

McARTHUR - The Oak Hill Oaks turned its non-league baseball game against Vinton County into a one-sided affair with a 14-3 win on the road Saturday.

Oak Hill (8-3) tagged Vinton County pitcher DJ Norris for 14 runs on 12 hits and four walks in 5.2 innings.

Norris struck out only two Oak Hill hitters and threw 104 pitches, before being relieved by Chase Abele with two outs in the top of the sixth inning.

The Vikings fell behind in the top of the first when Daniel Eggers singled to right-center field that plated Kyle Snyder for an early 1-0 lead.

But Vinton County loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and Jacob Wells, who walked to begin the inning, scored after Lincoln Hayes walked.

Oak Hill took the lead in the top of the second when Tyler Rice singled to drive home a run and Snyder had a two-run double into left field for a 4-1 lead.

Then Daniel Eggers launched a two-run home run off Norris in the fourth to increase Oak Hill's lead to 5-1 and the Oaks didn't stop there.

They scored three more runs in the fourth on RBI singles Bayley Clutters, Riley Kuhn and Eggers for an 8-1 advantage.

Vinton County (3-8) got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single by Bailey Bartoe, which scored Norris and Caleb Montgomery to make it 8-3.

However, the Oaks added two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to put the mercy rule into effect.

In the fifth, Michael Hayes singled and scored on a passed ball and Clutter doubled home a run to give the Oaks a 10-3 lead.

Then in the sixth, Michael Hays walked with the bases loaded, Snyder singled in another run and Clutters doubled to plate two more to take a 14-3 advantage.

Meanwhile, Hunter Lahrmer, who came on in relief for Oak Hill starter Jared Walls in the fifth inning, retired the Vinton County side in fifth and sixth to end the game.

Walls got the win on the mound for Oak Hill. He allowed three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and five walks in four innings of work.

Offensively, Oak Hill outhit the Vikings 13-5, as Clutters went 3-for-5 with a single, two doubles and four RBI. Eggers finished 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI for the Oaks.

Bartoe, who had a single, double and two RBI led the Vikings on offense.

Vinton County returns to TVC Ohio Division action on Wednesday at Wellston, while Oak Hill will travel to Waverly for a SOC Division II match up.
