BOYS BASKETBALL: Vikings prevail with late free throws against Chillicothe

RED THOMPSON, JR.
Staff Writer

CHILLICOTHE - In a game many Vinton County basketball fans point to as a seasonal benchmark, the Vikings were able to meet the challenge and win a tough fought 62-58 Tuesday night road win over the Chillicothe Cavaliers. The victory keeps the Vikings record perfect at 8-0 while Chillicothe falls to 3-5.

Because of their speed, quickness and strength of schedule, Chillicothe is the caliber of team the Vikings may face in coming tournament action.

As is often the case in the tournament action, it was big free throws, converted by the Vikings, down the stretch sealing the win. Tristen Bartoe hit two-free throws with 39 seconds left followed by two charity tosses from Derick Jones, with 26 seconds remaining, to give the Vikings a 62-55 lead The Cavs hit a three-pointer at the buzzer but it was not enough.

The Vikings received balanced scoring as three players scored in double figures .It was indeed Bartoe who led the way with 18 points while adding three assists. Naylan Yates had 15 and Jones chipped in with 14 and five rebounds as well. Chillicothe was paced offensively by Braiden Maughmer and Seth Barnes who had 19 points each. Maughmer also had nine rebounds and five assists to his credit .

Chillicothe played a sound-perimeter game as they held the usually hot outside shooting Vikings to just one three pointer in 10 attempts. Overall, it was a good night for the Vikings from the field as they connected on 25 of 50 (50 percent) of their shot.

The game started off fast paced as Chillicothe held an 18-16 lead after one quarter It was a last second half-court shot by Will Roderick, who finished with a nine point overall effort, giving his team the lead.

In the second quarter, Bartoe exploded with an eight-point effort to propel an overall 16-point gain by the Vikings to help them build a 32-25 lead at the half. In the third canto, there was a scoring fest between Chillicothe's Barnes and Yates as they led the teams with 10 and nine-point efforts to leave the Vikings ahead 47-39 and set up the exciting fourth quarter.

The Vikings return to action Tuesday when hosting the Logan Chieftains in a non-league battle while they also played Jackson Friday night.
