OAK HILL - Oak Hill head coach Norm Persin had nothing but high praises for his team's defensive effort Tuesday night in their 52-29 win over county-rival Wellston at Oak Hill High School.
"We were pretty good defensively, and we needed to be early in the game because we were struggling on the offensive end, which is unlike us right now," said Persin. "We forced stuff early, and weren't settling into the offense and getting to where we needed to be.
"But we got through that and came out in the second half and got everybody doing what they weren't doing in the first half, and any time you can hold a team to just 29 points, that's good defense."
It marked the second time this season the Oaks have held a team under 30 points in a contest, and after Tuesday's game, they are allowing just 36-points per outing, a strong indicator of why they are currently 10-0 nearing the midway point of the season.
Offensively, the Oaks are shooting at a nearly 50 percent clip, and came into the Wellston game having hit in excess of that mark four straight times.
However, they struggled to get shots to fall early and went nearly two and a-half minutes into the game before Nolan Carroll, who scored eight of Oak Hill's first quarter points, connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key.
Noah Henry responded with a three-pointer a minute later for Wellston, before Brett Long answered for the Oaks with a three.
Then Nolan Carroll scored on a layup off a steal just under the midway point of the stanza, and Oak Hill had a lead they would not lose.
The Rockets trailed 13-10 after the first period, but they had a disastrous second quarter, going without a field goal until the 1:44 mark when Michael Graham hit a three-pointer.
The Oaks opened the period scoring 11 unanswered points to take 14 point advantage before the Graham three and went in at the half with a 24-13 lead.
The Rockets opened the second half scoring the first four points to come within 24-17, but got no closer. The Oaks would go on to take a 12-4 scoring edge over the rest of the period and led 36-21 going into the final eight minutes of action.
Oak Hill opened with a 7-0 run to widen its lead, 43-21, to begin the fourth quarter.
The Oaks were led by Nolan Carroll with a game-high 17 points, while Landon Carroll and Mitchell Hale added 14 and 13 points respectively.
Matt Simpson paced the Rockets with 16-points, while Graham and Henry contributed 5 and 4 points respectively.
Oak Hill was scheduled for a SOC Division I match up against Wheelersburg at home on Friday night, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The Oaks will travel to Minford on Tuesday.
The Rockets traveled to Nelsonville-York for a TVC Ohio Division game on Friday night. Results were not available at press time.
