"There is no business like this in Jackson County," Bill Smith told The Telegram. "We wanted to bring quality used appliances to area residents." Smith Home Appliances, located in the former Honda-Suzuki of Jackson building at 10827 Chillicothe Pike, opened January 4 and is now open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, or as Smith said, "If the lights are on, stop in." He has been spending a lot of extra hours at the business which features used appliances, all of which have been repaired or refurbished to work exactly as they did when new.

Also featured are new scratch and dent appliances. "You have to look hard to see what's wrong," said Smith. "Sometimes it's just a matter of a shipping box being torn open."

Smith, and his father Jack, actually operate the business with Jack there when he can be. Bill is there all the time and does much of the repair and refurbishing work on about any kind of appliance you can name. There are used, and some new, scratch and dent microwaves on display.

"We service everything we sell," said the younger Smith. "We also do some minor in-home repairs, but if we can't fix it there we bring it in and repair it here." He said all appliances sold are checked over and tested to make sure anything that is sold is in good shape and operates as it did when it was new.

Also for sale are used and new parts for most appliances such as burner elements, knobs, handles, pumps, hoses, and vents. "Everything you need will come with the appliance," said Smith. "With washers and electric and gas dryers and stoves all the cords and hoses are included." Smith will do everything except ventilation and duct work.

New items are brought into the shop every week. On the floor now is a good selection of washers, electric and gas dryers, refrigerators, gas and electric stoves including glass top models, and microwaves. "We can even get what I call exotic models like the stove I found with eight burners. If someone comes and looks around and doesn't see what they want, we can get it for them in a reasonable time," Smith told The Telegram, "and at a reasonable price." He said some items can be purchased for 1/2 the price, or less, of a new one. Smith said, "We can help people get nice things they want for their homes. We usually keep name brand appliances on the floor, but we can service about any brand."

Also sold are smaller appliances for mobile homes and small apartments.

Smith Home Appliances also offers appliance removal and will deliver what is purchased in the store. "When we deliver an item we will get it in the house, set it up, and check it to make sure it is working as it should. You might also tell people if they buy more than one item at a time, they could get a better deal," Smith said.

The father and son team has a lot of experience in a lot of things mechanical and has always been involved in the maintenance of many types of machines and equipment.

The appliances sold come from dealers, trade-ins, and from individuals and after repaired and refurbished, everything sold comes with a 30 day guarantee. Smith said, "We service everything we sell and we stand behind what we sell."

The building that is now home to Smith Home Appliances sat vacant about 2 1/2 to 3 years and a lot of time has been spent cleaning it, building a wall, adding additional electric outlets, installing different lights, and applying a lot of paint. "We are still not finished, but wanted to get the shop open and make it nice for customers who stop in," said Jack. Bill added, "Even if people don't buy something, tell them to stop in, drink coffee, and talk with us. Maybe they will see something they may need in the future or want us to get something special for them."

Bill concluded his comments by saying, "We like making people happy. We can help people who can't afford something new, but can sell them an appliance that is just as good as new. We can save people a lot of money."

In the future, Smith Home Appliances hopes to offer things such as pool tables and when the weather gets warmer refurbished lawnmowers and grills may be offered. In March or April, a grand opening will be held, but plans haven't been set yet.

"Another thing to tell people," said Bill, "is that if our 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours do not fit their schedule, give us a call and we will make an appointment."

For the time being a cell phone number, 740-418-5370, is the easiest way to contact Smith Home Appliances or just stop in, enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee, and look around at the selection of clean used appliances available. You can also contact the store through e-mail at appliancesmith@gmail.com.
