10/10/2017 4:27:00 PM Volunteers now stepping up to Feed My Starving Children
The Christ United Methodist Church of Jackson is once again seeking the help of the entire Jackson County community and beyond as it participates in the Feed My Starving Children MobilePack project for the second straight year.
This Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13 and 14, volunteers will gather at the church Family Life Center on Portsmouth Street in Jackson to pack specially formulated food pouches, which will later be sent to starving children all over the world.
It's a mammoth undertaking, but the church is taking it on for a second straight year after an amazingly productive and satisfying experience last year. A church spokesman said the church hopes to host 800 to 1,000 volunteers from Jackson and surrounding communities with the goal of packing 250,000 meal packs.
Since the food in each pack costs 22 cents, there is also a financial challenge involved in the project as a total of $50,000 must be raised to meet food expenses.
"This event was a life-changing experience for many in our community last year," the church spokesman stated. "All ages were able to come together as a community to have fun and help pack these life-saving meals. School groups, sports teams, employees, family and friends came together and made a difference in so many children's lives across the globe."
Here's how the donations to Feed My Starving Children are used: $80 feeds one child for an entire year; $160 feeds two hungry children for an entire year; $365 provides an entire year of meals for a whole year for a family of four; $1,800 provides a pallet of food which provides 7,776 meals; and $5,000 provides enough meals to feed a village.
