Vinton County’s Lake Alma State Park and those who frequent the site are lucky to have such good friends. The Friends of Lake Alma group is once again in the process of making improvements to the park, with this year’s project being the installation of a new basketball court in the campground area.
As another installment of the annual Lake Alma Beach Party has come and gone, members of the Friends of Lake Alma group are now shifting their focus to making even more improvements to the state park, located in Vinton County.
The Friends of Lake Alma is a non-profit volunteer organization that assists park staff in planning and coordinating events. Since the group's start in 2004, all donations and net gains from its activities have been directed entirely toward the benefit of park users through investments in equipment, materials and event sponsorships.
Some of the improvements made over the years include the addition of new playground equipment, repairing bridges, installing new park benches, placing a new shower facility at the park's campground area, the construction of a dog park, planting flowers, and so on.
Before the start of the 2017 Lake Alma Beach Party, The Telegram spoke with a few members of the group, including Paul Davis. The plan for this year, according to group members, is to construct a basketball court at the campground site. Though work has not yet commenced on this project, the group does plan to have the court installed by this fall.
Davis and others explained, now that the beach party has taken place, the group plans to immediately begin planning for the new basketball court at its next meeting.
