5/19/2017 4:42:00 PM Jeff Montgomery to receive Wellston's prestigious 'Wall of Achievement' Award
A 1980 graduate of Wellston High School will be honored this year at the 127th Annual Wellston Alumni banquet. The Wellston City Schools, in partnership with the Wellston High School Alumni Association, has announced the name of the recipient of the 2017 "Wall of Achievement" Award. This is the tenth year that graduates and community leaders from the Wellston School District have been honored.
Wellston City School Superintendent Karen Boch announced that this year's honoree is Jeff Montgomery. After a stellar and record-breaking baseball career at Wellston High School and Marshall University, Jeff was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1983 with his Major League debut with the Reds taking place on Aug. 1, 1987. Jeff was later traded to the Kansas City Royals in 1988. As a relief pitcher with Kansas City, Jeff was given the American Rolaid Relief Man award in 1993, selected to the American League All-Star team in 1992, 1993 and 1996 and he finished his career in 1999 with 304 saves and is the all-time saves leaders for Royals. Montgomery has also received the distinction of being inducted into the Marshall University Hall of Fame in 1989 as well as being a member of the 2nd Class of the Wellston High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.
Montgomery has many business and charity interests including serving as Vice-President of Union Broadcasting in Kansas City, Missouri, hosting the Jeff Montgomery Golf Classic for 15 years with proceeds going to the Medical Missions Foundation, and he has been involved in many local and national charities. Currently Jeff is a baseball Analyst for Fox Sports Kansas City.
Wellston High School Alumni President John Pelletier stated that the Alumni Association is honored that Jeff Montgomery's induction into the 2017 Class of the Wall of Achievement will take place at the Annual Wellston High School Alumni Banquet.
The 127th Annual Wellston High School Alumni Banquet and catered reception will be Saturday, May 27 at the Wellston Middle School. The social hour and catered reception begins at 5 p.m. and the banquet at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at Brodigan's Sports and Trophies on Ohio Avenue in Wellston. The cost is $20 per ticket.
