6/13/2018 4:30:00 AM First-ever RCS Fest this weekend at Vinton County Airport
The first-ever RCS Fest will be held at the Vinton County Airport this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 15-17 and as of Sunday, June 10, a total of 42 participants from across the United States had pre-registered. That number is expected to increase by the beginning of the event on June 15.
RCS stands for Remote Control Saylors. Organizers Nathan and Abby Saylor say an additional 70 crew members, volunteers and spectators will also be in attendance, with some of them camping on airport property. Nathan is a Vinton County native. He and his wife currently live in Ashland, Kentucky and for several years, the two have been building RCS with a presence on YouTube and other digital media outlets.
The event will welcome anything RC with many of the planes flown being electric powered. There will also be a large selection of drones and, in fact, many small drones will compete in a race held in one of the airport's large hangars. The event is AMA sanctioned and Nathan, an AMA member, can teach participants to fly a drone.
The event will get underway at 8 a.m. Friday with beginner flying and other events over the three days will include a glider challenge, combat flying, race heats, a balloon pop challenge, a streamer cut challenge, micro drone racing and night flying events. A track will be built for RC truck and car racing. Events will continue until 3 p.m. Sunday when participants will head home after a morning of flying.
Also at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, breakfast will be served in the airport shelter house until 10 a.m. Lunch those days, with the airport's large grill going full-force, will be served from noon until 6 p.m. A bon fire will be held Saturday evening and a comedian will perform. During the weekend a hot pretzel vendor will be selling his products on scene.
The event is family-friendly and no alcohol will be permitted on airport property.
Parking will be free, but spectators to the event will be charged $10 and will receive a red arm-band, which will admit them to all activities. Airplane rides ($30 per person) will be offered all three days with tickets being sold in advance, especially for evening or night flights.
The Vinton County Airport is located about six miles north of McArthur off of St. Rt. 93 at 66285 Airport Road in New Plymouth.
