A vacant house located on U.S. Route 50 West between McArthur and Allensville was destroyed Wednesday, Jan. 3 as the result of an early morning fire. There was also a barn on the property but it appeared to be undamaged. The proximity of the fire caused the highway to be closed for about one hour.
McArthur Fire Chief Fri stated the fire had already gone through the roof when the fire department received the call at approximately 6:45 a.m. The chief stated that at this time the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Chief Fri also reported the crews responded quickly and overcame below-zero temperatures to put out the fire and secure the scene. He stated traffic was down in the area because the Vinton County Local Schools were closed.
Chief Fri also reported the Sheriff's Office deputies were on hand at the scene, and crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation directed traffic while the fire was being fought.
