Wild Turkey Festival gets the green light
McArthur Council agrees to close U.S. Route 50

RED THOMPSON, JR.
Staff Writer

The 2017 Wild Turkey Festival is on!

This was the phrase McArthur Mayor Kim Wortman used Wednesday night, March 15, after the McArthur Village Council voted to close U.S. Route 50 from Wednesday, May 3 through Sunday, May 7, to allow for the setup of the festival.

Usually this vote is just a formality each year, but this year the vote was held up because of three years' worth of unpaid insurance-rider bills the festival committee owed to the village. However, the committee recently paid the $1,061 bill and council was satisfied and gave the route-closing the green light at its most recent meeting.

Mayor Wortman says he is glad this issue has been resolved because of recent negative publicity the committee has been facing. To its credit, the committee has also avoided a lawsuit from an entertainment promoter and met with representatives of the Ohio Festivals and Events Association to get advice and guidance about making positive changes to the festival and its operations.

In other news connected to the festival, council also approved a bucket-drop fundraiser request from Wild Turkey Festival Queen Emily Chesser and First Attendant McKenna Bledsoe to have a bucket drop at the Main-Market streets stop light on Saturday, April 1 from 8 a.m. until noon. There will be adult supervision and the village will provide cones.

Committee Member Chris Kram thanked council for the approval and said he is looking forward to a great festival.
