Jackson Police officer earns Master Criminal Investigator certificate
Steve Sprague
Steve Sprague
Veteran Jackson Police Department (JPD) officer, Patrolman Stephen L. Sprague, was recently certified as a Master Criminal Investigator by the Ohio Police Office Training Commission of the Ohio Attorney General's Office.

Sprague, who has been employed by JPD since 2004, received the Master Criminal Investigator certificate and pin during a class in front of his peers from around the state at the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy (OPOTA) in London, Ohio on May 17.

"I was called up to the front of the class and awarded the Master Criminal Investigator certificate," Sprague wrote on his Facebook page. "It was really cool how my brothers and sisters in blue all clapped and congratulated me on this."

To earn this certificate, Sprague had to complete 192 hours of education, training and testing at OPOTA over a period of approximately four years. The program involved 128 hours of core training and an additional 64 hours of elective courses. All this work had to be done several hours away at OPOTA and around his full-time work at JPD.

Core courses were: Core criminal investigation, sex crimes investigation, computer crime first responder, death investigation, photography for investigations, drug identification and field testing.

Elective courses taken by Sprague were: Confidential informants, crime-scene photography and internal investigation.

Sprague feels the additional education and training have increased his knowledge and skills for his police department work and enabled him to keep up to date on the latest professional information and methodology.

In addition to his full-time duties as a road officer, he is also a longstanding canine officer for JPD and also is a canine evaluator for other law enforcement agencies.

Sprague says he appreciates the support he has received while working to earn his Master Criminal Investigator's certificate, especially from his wife, Tabby, and daughter, Sabrina, and from his fellow JPD officers.
