A man and a woman who attempted to avoid arrest by hiding in the crawl space of their house were apprehended this past Wednesday, April 11, by Jackson County Municipal Court probation officers and Jackson Police Department officers.

The Jackson County Municipal Court has identified the captured suspects as Christopher W. Bailey, 42, of 23 Cross St. in Jackson and Melissa A. Curtis, 34, also of 23 Cross St., Jackson. Bailey is being held on a probation violation and Curtis on a bond revocation involving a probation matter. However, their arrests came about due to a new investigation involving thefts in their neighborhood.

According to the Municipal Court, Jackson Police had received several calls earlier in the week regarding a female, who was allegedly stealing items from porches in the neighborhood, including mail from mailboxes. After investigating, police were able to determine that Curtis was the suspect and that she was living at 23 Cross St. with Bailey, who was believed to be her boyfriend.

Police notified the Municipal Court's Probation Department of the whereabouts of Curtis and Bailey, as both were on probation through the Jackson County Municipal Court and also wanted by the probation department.

On Wednesday morning, probation officers staked out the residence at 23 Cross St. in an attempt to apprehend Bailey and Curtis. Probation officers spotted Curtis at the front door of the home soon after the stakeout began and quickly approached the house as Curtis fled back inside. Probation officers surrounded the house and awaited backup from the other probation officers and the Jackson Police Department.

Once backup manpower arrived, officers attempted to make contact with the occupants, but no one answered the door. Consequently, probation officers then forced entry to the house. After an exhaustive search of the residence, officers located Bailey and Curtis, who were both covered in dirt, hiding in the crawl space underneath the house. They were both arrested.

Police officers also retrieved several items from the residence that were believed to be connected to the recent thefts in the neighborhood.
