An ill and disabled Jackson area man lost his home and all his possessions when an early-morning fire struck his residence last Sunday morning, Dec. 31.

The fire struck the residence of Harold McCoy at 13696 State Route 139, south of Jackson just after 1 a.m. Firefighters were able to put out the fire with the house still standing, but there was extensive smoke, water and heat damage throughout the interior. McCoy suffered from smoke inhalation and other injuries and was taken by Jackson County EMS to Holzer Medical Center-Jackson.

McCoy's cousin, Judy Rose of Jackson, told The Telegram that McCoy "lost everything" in the fire and that the losses were not insured and he will not be able to return to the rented house. The 64-year-old McCoy, who is a U.S. Marine veteran, is also dealing with serious health problems, including kidney failure and COPD, and is often confined to a hospital bed.

The American Red Cross provided some initial assistance, including providing McCoy with a night's lodging at a Jackson motel. However, this financial assistance was only temporary and there is no money for continued temporary lodging until a more permanent solution is found.

Rose is appealing to the public for immediate financial assistance and has established an assistance fund in the form of a checking account at the Jackson PNC Bank, located at 160 Broadway St. in downtown Jackson. This account is designated expressly to benefit McCoy and all donations will be greatly appreciated. For now, the money will be used to cover temporary lodging expenses.

Those wanting more information or wishing to contact Rose, may call her at 740-418-7147.
